Episode 16: Keep Your Day Job
This episode Kate and Doree go deep into mental health. They talk about the stigma that still exists around anxiety and depression, SSRIs, and how to find the right therapist for you (at least one that won't fall asleep during a session). Plus, Kate shares her first ever positive experience with a psychiatrist and Doree tells all about the Broadway dance class that's made it into her self-care routine.
Then, the women have the pleasure of speaking to Amy Spalding, author The Summer of Jordi Perez (And the Best Burger in Los Angeles). Amy talks about balancing a full time job and a thriving writing career, staying body positive when you're surrounded by body negativity, her love of lipstick, and why she'll never say goodbye to Grey's Anatomy. It's Sephora spring bonus time! Kate and Doree discuss their Sephora wish lists, and they also set some simple intentions for the week, like getting to bed early and bringing more fresh flowers into their lives.
Then, Doree interviews a very special guest: her sister Karen Vladeck (@KarenVladeckesq on Twitter)! Karen talks about seeking out self-care while also juggling motherhood and being a law partner, ignoring other people's judgment about childbirth and parenting, making time for manicures, and staying close with Doree through the years.

Doree returns to Los Angeles after a trip to Disney World with exciting news – Startup: A Novel is out in paperback! To celebrate, the women discuss how they met, their writing processes, and how the Twilight fandom is connected to Kate's book. Then they speak to Shadi Petosky (owner of Puny Entertainment, creator of Danger & Eggs, and Executive Producer of Netflix's Twelve Forever) who talks about keeping a tight calendar, insisting on sleep, and how producing is a form of self-care. Plus, she gives us the goods on her amazing nails and Elton John's Oscar party.
Episode 13: Old Habits Die Hard
Doree and Kate discuss Doree's recent trip to Target -- where she was tempted by the sweet, affordable Universal Thread line -- and the feeling of backsliding on her commitment to try to only buy sustainable or secondhand clothing. Then the women speak to Mary H.K. Choi(author of the YA novel Emergency Contact) about binge eating, letting go of old habits, and that one time she purchased a $4000 jacket. Plus she recommends a classic red lipstick!
Episode 12: Make Me Up Before You Go Go
It's the return of High/Low! Kate compares mascaras and Doree gets to the bottom of the great virgin marula oil conspiracy (note: there might not actually be a conspiracy, but there's a really expensive one and a really cheap one). Then they talk to Anya Yurchyshyn, author of the brand-new memoir My Dead Parents, all about her makeup obsession and her tips and tricks for getting the most out of your makeup. Kate and Doree sit down in similar loose-fitting outfits to reminisce about who first taught them about makeup, skincare, and self-care. Was it their moms, their bunkmates at camp, college friends, Oprah Winfrey or Sassy Magazine? (Spoiler alert: all of the above.) Plus Doree details the emotional side of purging her home office, and Kate talks about the spa day that got her through the recent anniversary of her mom's death. Then they're joined by TV writer, author, and Feminist Ryan Gosling creator Danielle Henderson, who dishes on her unique path to becoming a TV writer, how crafting and letter-writing keep her calm, and washing her face with sugar. Yes, sugar.
Episode 10: Meal of Approval
Kate and Doree discuss the struggle that is meal planning and cooking for your family, and talk about strategies to cope. (Be sure to check out Kate's separate post about meal planning!) Kate has a new philosophy for cooking for her two kids, which is to keep things as simple as possible, involving her kids in meal prep, and serving food family-style. Then they get YA author Jenny Han (The Summer I Turned Pretty series, the To All the Boys I've Loved Before trilogy) to share her chocolate chip cookie secrets and how to make the perfect scrambled eggs, as well as her skincare regimen and her favorite lipsticks.
Episode 9: Quitters Sometimes Win
Doree and Kate sit down with producer, writer, and director Priyanka Mattoo (The Homestay), who discusses how her experiences with post-partum depression after the birth of her son helped her get serious about her self-care. Plus, Priyanka walks us through her simple but effective skincare routine, and tips us off to the Maybelline lip stain she's been wearing for over ten years.
