Doree (00:10):

Hello and welcome to Forever 35, a podcast about the things we do to take care of ourselves. I'm Doree Shafrir.

Elise (00:17):

And I'm Elise Hu. And we're just two friends who like to talk a lot about serums,

Doree (00:21):

And this right here is a mini episode where we hear from you, we share your comments and your thoughts, and we answer your questions to the best of our ability. But please remember, we are not experts. We are podcast hosts and we always encourage you to seek support first and foremost, from a medical and or mental health professional as needed.

Elise (00:41):

This community is here for you though. If you need dish towel recommendations,

Doree (00:46):

Would you consider yourself a dish towel expert?

Elise (00:48):

I am not. But what I mean is even though we are not experts, our community might be, and

Doree (00:56):

That's true

Elise (00:57):

Dish towel recommendations don't typically require mental health professionals. So we had a really good time with Dish towel recommendations a good season ago. So that's just what I thought of when you did the disclaimer this time.

Doree (01:12):

That's so funny. Yeah. How's it going? How was your weekend?

Elise (01:17):

Oh man. I am still recovering From this past weekend, some things happened that were planned, some things happened that were unplanned. Wow. But the conclusion was when Rob left my house this morning, he was like, I'm getting out of here. We are. I need to go to my cave. Basically, we found out on Friday, late Friday or maybe late Thursday night, maybe the night before that Glo, who is a big Philly musician that he used to be into like 30 years ago and has continued to be a very successful touring musician, collaborated with Jack Johnson, which is how I knew him back in the aughts when Jack Johnson and Glo had some colabs that then brought glove into my consciousness. GL was playing the golf course, the nearby golf course, I guess he has just finished a tour and was doing a favor for a friend and was headlining the golf course concert series that happens every summer near me here on the west side. And Rob was like, oh my God, G Love we have to go. And so that started our weekend. He was very good. The last time that he had seen him was the nineties and the last, and then I texted a photo to Dore and Dory, you last saw him in the nineties too.

Doree (02:45):

I sure did. I, I saw him in, I think I saw him my first semester of undergrad. I probably have the ticket stub somewhere.

Elise (03:01):

That's amazing. That would be amazing. And he is just such an entertaining musician. He was able to, before he got other folks on stage, he was playing percussion with his feet and guitar with in Strum and everything with his hands and arms and he was playing harmonica that was mounted

Doree (03:22):

On him. It's like a one man band.

Elise (03:23):

He really truly is a one man band. It was so good and because it was the golf course, you could just get right up on there onto the stage, nearly onto the stage. It's rare that there's a big show where you can get so close anymore.

Doree (03:37):

I love that. I had a great looking through some old ticket stubs here. Back in the day, seeing live music was not that expensive.

Elise (03:50):

No, it wasn't.

Doree (03:50):

And now it's really expensive. So a not wealthy college student like me could go to a lot of great shows. It's sad. All this stuff is so expensive now.

Elise (04:03):

It really is.

Doree (04:04):

Now I'm determined to find this. I realize that this is real side quest kind of situation. I didn't mean to

Elise (04:12):

Send you down this rabbit hole. And speaking of rabbit holes,

Doree (04:16):

Yes.

Elise (04:16):

Luna was in a show, Alice in Wonderland, Jr.

Doree (04:19):

Oh my gosh.

Elise (04:20):

And it made me realize that that whole play or that whole story is just one long extended trip. I realized I hadn't seen Alice in Wonderland performed and it felt like such an acid trip until one of the other parents reminded me. Well, the whole story of Alice Wonderland is the story of basically a trip she goes on. Totally. It's essentially like a consciousness bending trip so it would make sense. And she was correct.

Doree (04:51):

Right? Yes. That's very funny. Who, sorry, did I ask you who Luna played?

Elise (04:57):

She was in the company. She didn't have any speaking parts. She was the nine of spades or something. She was like a giant card of giant playing card. It was very cute. I was just relieved that it wasn't another Disney musical. They have been in many school musical productions of various Disney shows, and I was ready for something different.

(05:18):

So that went well. The reason why I'm so I'm in recovery though, is because Sunday was crazy. Sunday I decided to run a 5K with the students who run as part of the LA Marathon training program. There's this great group in LA called Students Run LA where public school kids can take part in running clubs at their school and they run a series of road races throughout the year all culminating with the LA Marathon. And so some of the kids, if you're so cool, and you can start in middle school. And so some of the kids who are graduating this year, they've run six LA marathons in a row because they did it in seventh, eighth, ninth, 10th, 11th and 12th. Incredible. And they had an end of the year closing run, just an easy 5K through Boyle Heights. And one of my documentary film subjects was in it. So I was like, I'm going to run with you, you guys, and we got to do it together. And they closed down the new sixth Street bridge and we got to run over the sixth Street Bridge and the LA River. And it was really actually kind of cool. And my friend Amanda, who's a real northern California, and she was like, what is this strange feeling? I've never felt it before. Is it affection for la?

(06:38):

She couldn't figure it out. Yeah, my running buddy, she's funny. Yeah. So we both had a good time, but then I had to keep shooting with Abel that day. So we were way out of town and I couldn't get back to my home on the other side of town, and this is how spread out LA is. I couldn't get back home in time to shower and then drive back in order to continue the documentary shoot. So I got a hotel room for the morning in Pasadena just to shower because that's how spread out LA is. And I had some extra Marriott points. So obviously I didn't want to spend money on it, but I spent points on it. I showered and then continued the day because they had an end of the season banquet, which was supposed to be outside and yesterday was very cold and rainy. So we got rained on for a few hours after running the 5K. And then there was an outdoor book event where I met your friend Z yesterday. We did a charity book event

Doree (07:34):

Friend and former Forever 35 guest. I be

Elise (07:37):

Bet. Yes. Z Romanov. Yes, Z Romanov. Yeah. I was really excited to meet her amazing writer. She was signing copies of Big fan her book that I've already recommended in our pop culture Rex episodes last summer. And by the time I got back home last night and then we had dinner, we had to go out to dinner with Rob and his mom last night that was previously scheduled. So by the time we were at dinner even I couldn't form words. It was just like no cognition. And I had actually asked Rob before we went to dinner, I was like, please don't ask me any questions or make me speak. I cannot speak. And I was just so tired. And then of course we get there and he forgets and he is like, oh, so Elise, you're working on a new thing lately? And I'm like, Nope. Oh God, I'm somewhat recovered now. Anyway, you catch me up. Tell me about what you've been up to.

Doree (08:32):

Well, we were supposed to have a sort of overstuffed Saturday with kids stuff. Henry was supposed to have soccer, then we were going to go to synagogue with one of his classmates. Then he was going to go to a birthday party. But then Henry got sick Friday night. So Henry spent Saturday in front of the TV on the couch with a fever.

Elise (09:01):

Oh no,

Doree (09:01):

Not really any other symptoms except a headache.

Elise (09:04):

Is he feeling better now?

Doree (09:05):

Yes, he is. He was feeling better. Sunday, his fever was like a hundred. It wasn't like he wasn't super sick, but he was sick enough that I was not going to send him to a birthday party.

(09:16):

And then I had a werewolf party Saturday night, and if you're not familiar with werewolf, it's basically traitors. So there's werewolves and villagers instead of traitors and faithfuls. And someone plays the role of Alan Cumming the mayor and kind of is the ringleader of the whole thing. And it was with a group of moms that I'm part of, a big mom Facebook group, and we go on an annual retreat. Oh, that's right. And we always play a big game of werewolf. And so one of the women was like, let's have a werewolf party. How fun. Because fun. It's kind of halfway through the year when we usually have the retreat. So it was really nice. It was really nice to see all these women who I don't see on a regular basis. It was super fun. It was really, really fun. That sounds rad. Yeah. Yeah. Good. Yeah. Then Sunday Henry was feeling well enough to go to his baseball game, so we did that. And then I taught Mahjong on Sunday night. So yeah, it was a nice weekend.

Elise (10:24):

Good. I'm glad that you got to play werewolf. Maybe if whenever you do feel like doing some sort of party, you should be the mayor. You should run a werewolf game with all your people.

Doree (10:39):

Wait, why me?

Elise (10:40):

Because you love it. You could be the of a thing,

Doree (10:47):

But it's fun to play.

Elise (10:50):

Yep.

Doree (10:51):

It's fun to play.

Elise (10:53):

All my kids have really enjoyed playing werewolf or mafia, however you want to, whichever iteration that you want to call it. And they do it at when they do summer day camps and things like that. But I always find it so confusing. And then I don't know if they're doing the rules like they're playing by the rules correctly or giving away things too early.

Doree (11:13):

That's so funny. Well, Elise, let's take a little break. But before we do that, I would love to be getting more communications from listeners. You can call or text us at (781) 591-0390. And we are going to have an expert come on and answer some of them. So please do we now going take a short. All right, we're back and we have a voicemail.

Listener Voicemail (12:38):

Hey Elise and Dory. I'm following with a product reference. This is my first ever calling for a product reference. I wanted to recommend the Wonder Skin Wonder Blading Lip Color kit. I was very skeptical of this, but intrigued because it's one of those peel off all day lip colors that I feel like is very TikTok trendy right now. But I was intrigued because I work a busy job in politics and so I like to look nice for work, but I don't seem to be putting lipstick on over and over again. And I tried it and it's amazing. I tried specifically the ADO color and it's really easy to put on. It looks gorgeous. I just did two layers of it and then you spray on the stuff on top of it and then you wipe it off. The color did it faded by the end of the day, but it stayed pretty much on all day long and I just feel like it looks really natural and I got the lip oil to put on top of it to make it a little shiny in the morning and then just let that wear off. But then this color still stays on. So I love it. I am curious if anyone else has tried it and likes it and what other colors look natural. And I also love that on their website, they show the colors on lots of different skin tones so that you can see what it looks like and would look like on you.

Elise (14:08):

Okay,

Listener Voicemail (14:08):

Thanks so

Elise (14:09):

Much. Bye. I like this because I have never, I've also been skeptical of this TikTok trend of these essentially they're like lip masks. So this is the Wonder Skin. So folks who miss the voicemail, it's the Wonder Skin Wonder Blading Peel and Reveal Lip Stain kit. So it's like a lip mask and then you remove the mask and the stain stays all day or should, and it comes in many, many colors. There's people demoing this on the old socials if you haven't seen them yet,

Doree (14:40):

But wow,

Elise (14:41):

We have a glowing wreck from one of our listeners

Doree (14:44):

Glowing.

Elise (14:45):

Yes. Alright.

Doree (14:46):

Absolutely glowing.

Elise (14:48):

So any other Wonder Skin peel and reveal users out there, call in and let us know what your experience has been or if you have any similar wrecks.

Doree (14:59):

Okay, thank you for that. We have another voicemail.

Listener Voicemail (15:05):

This message is for Dory. This is about the mail Love glow maker CE vitamin C serum. I just want to let you know that a long time ago you guys did an interview with Chemist Confessions. There are two skincare chemists, Gloria and Victoria, and it introduced me to them and their world. And now I am such big fans of them about their book. I use their product line, they have face Wash, this amazing aquifer like concoction called Balm Voyage anyway, and they have a podcast. And a while ago they had a podcast on it's worth looking back in their history about dupes ce Ferulic SkinCeuticals, the OG one, as you know, Dorie, the patent expired. So that's why you see a lot of dupes now. And they tested these dupes with an oven and using some sort of, I don't know, formal way and may love actually came to the top as one of the best ones.

(16:17):

And also to the listener, it cannot be in a pump a true vitamin C because it oxidizes. So it needs that little bubble to be able to kind expand. Yeah, I wouldn't trust a vitamin C in a pump in a million years. So anyway, I think the chemistry of skincare is super cool and it's not something I was exposed to or knew a lot about until I heard them on Forever 35 and now I know tons about it. So anyway, I love, love that made love. I'm so happy about the price of it. Alright, thanks.

Elise (16:48):

Bye-bye. Amazing. Yeah, there is so much chemistry involved, the temperature that things need to be be the most to stay most potent and all those things

Doree (17:01):

Fast.

Elise (17:01):

Fascinating.

Doree (17:02):

I'm trying to remember where I read this thing about the pump because that was definitely something that was in my head. So where did I get that from? No idea. I don't know. I will report back. I'll try to find this.

Elise (17:19):

Okay,

Doree (17:21):

This. But yes, I'm glad that Melo sort of came out on top. It is really good and it is substantially cheaper than the SkinCeuticals like insanely. Okay. We also got a text that said, hi y'all. I'm wondering if you or any listeners might have a dupe recommendation for a discontinued product conundrum. My husband loves the Tom Ford for Men Bronzer. It's a thin liquid formula. TF has discontinued its men's line, so my husband has been rationing it but is finally almost at the end of the tube. I'm wondering what might be a good replacement. I've seen that Elf has one that has been cited as a dupe and I always love their prods. So think it may be a good option, but would love to hear any other suggestions.

Elise (18:15):

I don't know any off the top of my head, but this is exactly the kind of question to bring to our crowd. So call in, write in, text us, let us know. Have you tried the Elf Dupe for Tom Ford for Men Bronzer? And do you like it if that one suffices? And if not, are there other potential dupe for the Tom Ford for Men Bronzer to help with this husband's product conundrum?

Doree (18:44):

So this is very funny. I'm watching an Instagram video where someone had this exact conundrum and their recommendation was the Elf Bronzing gel. These are gels, they refer to them as gels, by the way. Or Bronzing drops. Elf Bronzing drops. But Tom Ford was a bronzing gel.

Elise (19:05):

Got it.

Doree (19:06):

But what this person is putting on their hands, the elf, I mean this is foundation. Am I crazy? This is just foundation. I know that they're calling it bronzing gel, but it really looks like foundation.

Elise (19:24):

Well, I sure hope it has sunscreen in it so long as it has SPF in it, I'm down.

Doree (19:32):

I don't think it does, but

Elise (19:34):

Which prompts me then to ask if it doesn't have sunscreen in it, why not? Why not?

Doree (19:40):

Well, and also why not use, so Elf refers to it as a tinted serum, but it does not have SPF in it. I believe that it is meant to be layered. They say mix with your favorite moisturizer.

Elise (19:59):

I see.

Doree (20:01):

I mean, what about just a tinted moisturizer?

Elise (20:04):

Okay. Yep, yep.

Doree (20:06):

I'm just going to throw that out there. But I would love to hear if other listeners have any specific suggestions for this du conundrum.

Elise (20:18):

Aup Dilemma,

Doree (20:19):

DUP Dilemma. Dule. Alright, we are going to take another short break and we will be right back with some podcast recommendations.

Elise (20:28):

Oh yeah, stick with us.

Doree (20:37):

All right, we are back. And we had a request recently for some podcasts that were sort of similar in Vibe to Forever 35. I think The Listener wanted chatty conversational pods with hosts that had a rapport and we had some suggestions, listeners had some more suggestions. So here we go with a voicemail, some suggestions.

Listener Voicemail (21:04):

Hello, Dory and Elise. This is Emma from Chicago. I'm calling with some podcast recommendations for the listener who called in on mini app 4 4 1 and the podcast I recommend for her and other Forever 35 listeners that you didn't already mention. Our culture study by Anne Helen Peterson. She has great guests and covers all types of topics in pop cultures in pop culture. She's super smart and interesting vibe. Check with your friend Sam Sanders, studied Jones and Zach Stafford, all three brilliant people and always covering interesting topics in news and culture. And the last is be there in Five by Kate Kennedy, another brilliant person, writer, pop culture expert who does long form podcasts on her own and also with guests. Those are in my rotation and highly recommend for the listener and others. Bye.

Elise (22:14):

Love those. I mean, it should have been obvious that I am a frequent listener of Vibe Check and Sam is one of my besties and that show is so good. They're so good on news topics too. Going back to, I'm thinking about the Columbia University protests and Saeed was really good right after all of that was really exploding. It's ostensibly a pop culture podcast, but they also talk about whatever's really in the headlines also. And they've had some really fun conversations about, we had Stacey Abrams on this week and she talks about, if you haven't listened to it, she talks about how much she loves television and one of the shows that she really loves is Spoiler alert, if you haven't heard this episode, Reacher Reacher, the series on, I think Amazon Prime and Saeed Jones on Vibe Check. Huge Reacher fan also. And so it's like it's a running joke about how he needs to get off the pod so he can go watch Reacher. That's what made me think of it.

Doree (23:15):

I mean, look, I think I might start watching Richard. It actually does sound like something I would enjoy because honestly, except for the Pit as we've discussed, I'm a little nervous about the Gore, but several of the other shows she mentioned are shows I've really liked The Diplomat and these are basically the books she writes too. I kind of like this whole vibe. So I think I might get into Reacher. You heard it here first. Yeah. I've known Sayed forever because he worked at Buzzfeed.

Elise (23:54):

Yeah, that's right. That's right. He's such a character.

Doree (23:57):

He is such a character. Okay, so we got another text with some pros. This listener also recommends Vibe Check with former guest Sam Sanders, bad on paper, which is another, I think we've had at least one of their hosts on the show. That's also a great pod. Be there in five. Oh my god, I can't believe we forgot about be there in five. Kay Kennedy is just, I love her so much, she's just such a genius and she does have guests on, but she also spends a very substantial portion of the show. Just monologuing.

Elise (24:30):

Yeah,

Doree (24:31):

She's amazing. She's one of a few people that can do that. That is very hard. That is very, very extremely hard to monologue, interestingly,

Elise (24:44):

For

Doree (24:45):

An hour longer. I mean it's truly, it's unbelievable and I just love her take on things and her deep dives and she's just so wonderful. Normal gossip. And who Weekly? Who Weekly. Such a classic.

(25:02):

It's so funny, we've had Kate on, we had Kelsey on from Normal Gossip and we've had Lindsay on from who Weekly. So we've had all these hosts on. That's so fun. Great suggestions. Well listeners, yes, if you have more podcast res, let us know. I also loved that we got some product res and a product question this week, so if you have more product res, get at us. Keep 'em coming. Elise, also, just quickly before we go, I was going to talk about my dermatologist appointment this morning where I got an update on my hair and we didn't really have time, so I think I'm going to save it for the casual chat on Friday. Yes. Okay,

Elise (25:45):

Good. Casual

Doree (25:46):

Chat ready come

Elise (25:46):

Out on

Doree (25:47):

Friday?

Elise (25:47):

Yes. If you are subscribed to our Patreon, you can get the update first.

Doree (25:52):

You can get the scoop on my hair. Alright, we will talk to you all soon. Bye. See you later.
