Doree: Hello and welcome to Forever 35 Podcast about the things we do to take care of ourselves. I'm Doree Shafrir.
Elise: And I'm Elise Hugh. And we are just two friends who like to talk a lot about serums
Doree: And this is a mini episode where we hear from you, we share your comments and your thoughts, and we answer your questions to the best of our ability.
Elise: And we have heard from you about our recent refresh and relaunch and we heard such warm and enthusiastic and engaging notes and messages and comments. And so I just want to thank y'all.
Doree: It's been really nice to hear everybody's feedback, so thank you. One of my friends texted me. Congrats on your very glam podcast relaunch. I was like, well, okay. We
Elise: Clapped it up, we cleaned our
Doree: Socks up. We did for this. We really classed up the joint. I showered. I did my weekly shower. I know exactly. I'm like, is it more glam than it was before? I don't. We used the same photographer.
Elise: We did, we did.
Doree: I mean, I guess maybe I'm wearing a more dramatic, the black is a little more dramatic.
Elise: I love
Doree: That top. I love that top. It's such a good top. Should I? It's a newly top. This is not an ad, but newly, if you want to sponsor this show, please let me know. And I'm like, should I buy it? You can buy the lease stuff. But I'm also,
Elise: I've done that with several pieces.
Doree: It just depends on the price point. It depends on the price and it's also like, will I wear this? Do you know what I mean? I think it's a beautiful shirt and I loved how it fit and I just love, love the shirt. But I'm like, how often do I go to something that would necessitate wearing this shirt? Now that said, I feel like sometimes I say that and then I have events that would necessitate the wearing of that shirt and I'm like, I don't have a shirt.
Elise: And then you'll regret having sent it back
Doree: And then I'll regret it. So I'm like, I'm torn. The discounted price is $70.
Elise: Oh, that's not bad. It looks like a more expensive shirt than that. Or a more expensive blouse or top than that. It
Doree: Does.
Elise: You wore it with black pants for the photo, but you could wear it with jeans and it'd be a very cute going out for drinks with your
Doree: Girlfriend's kind of talk. Yes, yes. I'm going to see if I can find it on the anthropology website and see how much it costs
Elise: There. So those of you all who don't know newly, newly is the kind of rent the runway or the clothing rental offshoot of anthropology. So all the clothes are from Anthropology or
Doree: Urban Out Outfitters or Free People, which is
Elise: Right. The ownership group that owns all of those.
Doree: I worked at Urban Outfitters the first semester of my freshman year in college.
Elise: I did not know that. We need to bring this up with our guest with retail experience who is coming up in a couple of weeks. Teaser.
Doree: Yes. Urban Outfitters actually started in Philadelphia, which is where I went to college. And the store I worked in was, it was not the original location, but it was like the location they moved to after the original location.
Elise: Got it, got
Doree: It. So an og, I think I made $6 an hour or maybe even less, maybe like 5 25. I definitely made minimum wage in 1995.
Elise: I was something around that in the late nineties when I started working, my first job was at the Gap, so I also worked in retail and learned how to fold a lot of jeans and
Doree: K. Yes. I still fold my jeans that way.
Elise: Me too. Me too. And I'm like, where's my t-shirt folding board? Because you learn how to fold the shirts a certain way. Yes, yes. But yeah, I started working at The Gap that one summer that swing dancing came back in.
Doree: Oh my
Elise: God. And then there was that gap swing dancing commercial in all the Gap khakis.
Doree: That's
Elise: My first year working, because I think I was around 15 at the time. And the khakis, the khaki craze was on the, I don't think it's ever been that big
Doree: Was on. I know they really got people to buy a lot of khakis
Elise: And swing dance. Take a lot of swing dancing classes. Do a lot of swing dance dates.
Doree: Totally, totally. Oh, that's so funny.
Elise: More blast from the past. I was taking my sixth grader Ava to school with her friend Quinn, and they were like, we want to hear TBOs, we want to hear TBOs rapping. They're all into Eminem and Aaliyah. And then yesterday tbo and I was like, okay, let's play waterfalls for my sixth grade year and we can connect that way. And they're like, waterfalls, that's TLC. And I'm like, TBAs Left Eye Chili TLC. And they're like, wait, they didn't know that TBAs was in tlc. I feel like they think of TBAs as well. They did. These girls thought of TBAs as a separate entity until I was like TLC because there's there's bunch of stuff going around on their TikTok, not on mine. My TikTok is all one
Pot cooking,
But about kind of t's death and how it was untimely. It was too early
Doree: Because
Elise: There's a lot of talk about Tupac and Tupac dying too early now because the kids have been learning via the P Diddy headlines about
Doree: Tupac. Yes, yes,
Elise: Yes. So they were like, oh, that's so tlc TBOs left Eye Chili. And I'm like, yes, yes. They were all together when TBOs was killed in the a TB accident or whatever. Yes, yes. So we all enjoyed some classics from my youth, like waterfalls and no scrubs driving to school.
Doree: Yeah, some oldies.
Elise: Good times, good times. Soon I'm going to play that swing dancing music from the Gap commercial and see if I can't make that a thing,
Doree: Bring it back.
Elise: The nineties are big right now among the youth. We should do our caveat. I realize we haven't done that yet.
Doree: Oh, you're right. We have not done our caveat. I forgot. Our caveat is that when we are responding to your questions, please keep in mind we are podcast hosts. We are not experts. We always encourage you to seek support first and foremost from a medical and or mental health professional as needed. Thank you. Okay. I'm glad we caveated. Before we take a break, we got a couple of texts that I just wanted to share. Great. One says, new site looks great. Welcome Elise.
Elise: Hello.
Doree: Guest request. I loved the episode when Kate and Doree had their spouses on. Would love you to chat with Rob and Matt.
Elise: Oh. But then it'll be revealed to Rob that we've been making fun of him so much
Doree: You don't think he knows?
Elise: I don't think he knows. I think he listens every once in a while.
Doree: Oh, interesting. Okay.
Elise: No, he's bound to know because I also am like that to him in real life. That would be fun. That's a great suggestion. I once had Rob on with his sister to play a game on. It's been a minute because on it's been a minute. There's a game called Who Said That? Or there used to be when Sam Sanders was hosting and you would play quotes from the week and then the guests would guess who said that. And they tended to be kind of big news headlines or something fun in culture. We played, we were doing a reboot themed episode of, it's Been a Minute, and so I had Rob come on with his sister to play Who said that? The reboot edition and we played old television theme music and they were stumped. It was like one after another. They were stumped.
Doree: That's fun.
Elise: And the last one, I played the theme music to MacGyver, the original MacGyver.
Doree: He work on the reboot
Elise: And he didn't know. He didn't know Busted. He couldn't recognize the originals theme song. We were like
Doree: Busted. Oh my God, Rob. Wow, okay. He was like, I didn't watch it, I just wrote it. You were like, what about didn't you do any research? That's hilarious. That's really funny. We
Elise: Should see if the spouses are up for that. That's a great suggestion.
Doree: I mean Matt is always up for it.
Elise: Oh yeah. He's a professional podcaster,
Doree: But it's up to Rob.
Elise: I'll ask him
Doree: Whether he wants to. Okay. And then we also got a text that said Hello from Dallas. Can I get more info on Doree's four week Peloton strength program? It would be perfect. Only two classes a week, but I'm having trouble finding it in the app. Thank you. We will link to it in the show notes, but also if you go to programs, which is a special, a specific tab on Peloton, you can't just search for it in the regular classes tab, go to programs and look for Adrian Williams Glutes and Legs Strength. That is the name of the program.
Elise: Hopefully that helps.
Doree: Yeah. Okay. Before we take a break, if you want to reach us, our voicemail is 7 8 1 5 9 1 0 3 9 0. You can also text us at that number and our email is Forever 35 podcast@gmail.com. Elise: We'll be right
Doree: Back. Okay. We are back and I want to play a voicemail that we received that I really enjoyed.
Voicemail: Hey Doree and Elise, I don't have much to say except that I too was living in Fort Green during the Carrie Russell new motherhood era. Excited to hear that you were there too. Doree, and that we overlapped. I was also babysitting and interning at the time and thinking, why am I not Carrie Russell's babysitter? It was so thrilling to see her at the little playground in Fort Green Park and just walking around the streets. It was just like a highlight of the day. And then my friend actually lived across from where she moved in Burham Hill and we used to try to spy on her through the window. We had a couple sightings, which was very exciting. Anyways, yeah, I just wanted to share that. I too was thrilled by that era and what a great time to live in Fort Green. Alright, take care. Bye.
Doree: It really was a vibe
Elise: And it's so specific to a certain
Doree: Time period. It's so specific, it's so specific.
Elise: It's so specific to a neighborhood, so specific to a person and an era in her life when she was a young mother. Now my kids are grown. Wow.
Doree: So funny. I loved this. I probably saw this person.
Elise: I know you're probably in the same
Doree: Prop hanging around,
Elise: Right?
Doree: Both thinking. Yeah, I lived in Fort Greene for years, so
Elise: That's right.
Doree: Thank you for this. I really enjoyed getting this.
Elise: So moving on. We have some responses to a question last week, so we should just give the context. Last week we had a question from a listener who wanted to show her support for Kamala but couldn't really, she had to show secret support because she works at a major organization where she couldn't be
Doree: A major news organization. Partisan.
Elise: Yes. A major news organization where she couldn't be partisan and so she had some ideas like maybe a Kamala tattoo that wasn't showing or some brat Green nails. A few of y'all wrote in. One is via email and it reads. Heard that question on the pod and thought of this email my aunt just sent me. She's a jewelry maker in Marin County and she's making these two styles of law necklaces. So that's comma like the punctuation. If a person isn't told what it is called, most people wouldn't realize. Super subtle. And then she linked us to two different kinds of comma law, custom jewelry, sterling silver, and bronze on black. We will include the links in our show notes on our newly redesigned website. I thought this was so cute. They were really cute too. I looked at the jewelry, I went and looked at the links, so
Doree: Okay.
Elise: They are very subtle. They are very subtle.
Doree: So cool. And then we also got a text that said, for the listener looking for election night ideas, Kamala's big on wearing converse. Could you wear a pair of Converse sneakers with the blue dress? You could always pretend it's just to be comfortable while you're on your feet. That evening we got another person wrote in to suggest converse. Really? I thought this was a great suggestion.
Elise: Yeah, I like that.
Doree: I like that. So if you have other ideas, let us
Elise: Know. I like the Converse with a suit look that she wears a lot. Me,
Doree: I might have to borrow that too. Me too. Alright, we got a text that covers a lot of ground. Okay,
Elise: Go for it, Dora.
Doree: Alright. Okay. Hi Doree. Elise. Well this is to you Elise. Congratulations on the new puppy. I feel like we also, we haven't gotten a puppy update,
Elise: Man. He's growing up so fast. Can I just say he came home, he was 12 pounds. It's been two weeks now he's 20. And so I've been taking a weekly selfie with him in the mirror and this week when I took the weekly selfie at 10 weeks, I could barely one arm him anymore because I have to hold up my camera with the other arm and then he's moving and wriggling.
Doree: Wow.
Elise: He's getting so big so fast and his snout is kind of elongating. It's getting longer. It's not smashed into his face as it was when he was a puppy. So he's a golden retriever.
Doree: Cute. So their nose cute. They grow up so fast, they grow up so fast. Okay, back to the email or text. My biggest puppy tip is to find an in-person trainer you like and attend puppy classes for the first year. This really helped with staying consistent with training and having someone who was not me. Notice the progress the puppy was making. I also found a puppy training Reddit thread that had the two to one training tip, which was a godsend for those first six to eight months. Basically for every hour your puppy is out exploring the world, AKA, creating havoc. They have two hours of rest in their crate puppy pen, safe puppy area. You repeat that throughout the day and it was a godsend and take lots of pictures because puppies are a scam and are small for four to six days.
Elise: Oh, I know. I'm living it. I'm living this scam. I've been scammed. My
Doree: God, you've been scammed. You're like, oh, I got this cute little stuffed animal. Oh no. Okay,
Elise: Now he's just a velociraptor.
Doree: Yeah. Also, I recommend just a basic flower sack towel for a kitchen towel. They really get the job done and are very affordable. You can find them at Target or Walmart pretty much anytime. And once they start looking a bit sad, I retired them to cleaning rags to extend their lifespan. And lastly, maybe last year someone recommended going through photos on a regular basis, searching for a specific date and deleting repeats or screenshots or memes you no longer need. This had been so helpful for me because I've been able to go through years at a time, one day at a time and have better decision making about what to keep and what to delete. It's a great playing activity and a sweet way to relive memories, especially of when my boys were little. They're now eight and six and also like to see memories from when they were little. Thanks for the pod. Love what you do. So happy that Elise is staying forever 35.
Elise: Yeah. Yeah. Do I get to That's what happens when you join this podcast. Podcast. I was going to say some youth elixir
Doree: Now. Yeah. Yes. That's what happened. Is that the initiation? I forgot to tell you. Yes. This was such a great tip from someone about how to clean out your photos. I think their tip was to just go back to every year of that day's date and that's how you would go day by day.
Elise: Oh, and then it doesn't feel like such a massive task
Doree: Either. Yeah, exactly. I've always been like, yes, what a great idea. And then
Elise: Have I done it? Really? I do. To organize. Yeah. I learned one tip too. I was also sort of vexed by this and just the digital detritus that piles up, especially because you take so many, it's like, well, I'm not going to run out of space, but one tip that I got was to favorite. After you take a batch of photos, just go through and favorite the ones that you like the most. And that way your favorites folder is already kind of edited down and it's more
Doree: Manageable. That's smart.
Elise: So favoring as you go along is another good tip in that photo organization realm.
Doree: That's very smart. I like that. I like that a lot. Alright, we are going to take another short break and we will B rb. Okay, we're back. Elise, the dish towel recommendations just keep coming.
Elise: They keep coming.
Doree: We've also, I'm not reading this text, but we got another recommendation for the geometry, kitchen towels,
Elise: Geometry and the target ones. Yeah. Oh no. Geometry and William Sonoma. Yes.
Doree: Oh yes. William Sonoma. That's right. This listener had a different recommendation.
Elise: Great. Let's try it.
Doree: I love the five two essential towel from Food 52. They are pricey, but they're amazing and have really stood up over many years of use. They have two different styles. One that is thinner flower sack and one that is thicker and more textured utility. I find they both are great to have and have different uses. Food 52 will often have a sale and it can be a good time to stock up on these. Also for wiping down counters and cleaning up messes. We have replaced paper towels with these bamboo little rags, which are amazing and have also held up extremely well over many years. They're very affordable and wash slash dry so nicely. I have a little plastic bucket that I throw the rags and towels in when they're dirty. And then I wash them all together once a week so that I end up always having clean ones. Hope this helps. It does help.
Elise: Yeah, it does. You can get a 10 pack. I'm on Amazon, which is the link which we will include in our show notes with this episode. And you can get a 10 pack for 9 99. So they are very affordable.
Doree: Great. Love that. You know what? Let's keep these dish towel recommendations coming. Okay. I did have a thought of we could get all of the dish towels that our listeners have recommended and we could test them.
Elise: We could be our own wire cutter,
Doree: We could be our own wire cutter and see which ones we like the best.
Elise: I certainly have the messes for it.
Doree: Amen to that. Okay, we got another voicemail with an interesting question.
Voicemail: Okay. Hey, Julia and Elise comments in question around Costco clothes. So I think just talked about Costco quite a bit, but I'm starting to wonder if they're clothes, they're starting to have more of a moment or maybe I'm just getting there. I think I've known, always thought they've had good leggings, more of a leisure. Sure. But socks, all that. But recently I've been going there more frequently and I started every time looking at their clothes. I got a pair of pants recently, but I wore to work and I really liked them and I think they were actually pretty siloed. I think they were like 15 bucks. And then I had a moment with a ton of shirt jackets right now, which I didn't know what a shirt jacket was, but I decided to buy one. I'll text you guys the link. It's like a green and white kind of plaid.
And I was bring it to walk to pick my kids up from school and I saw another woman wearing the same thing and both I was like, Hey, I like your jacket. She was like, Costco. And I said, yeah. So anyways, we had a bit of a moment. We did a high five. We both realized we were in Costco pants too. But anyway, I was just thinking about it. I think there's something there because I know I have to try it on there, which is nice. I know I'm going to be coming back in a couple weeks, a month if I don't like it. Easy to return. It's just not that many choices. That makes it really simple. So I was just thinking about it. Anyway, curious if you guys have tried anything you liked or listeners I late to the party or if this really is an emerging moment. Thanks. Bye.
Doree: I mean, I feel like if you ask Kate Spencer, she would say you're late to the party.
Elise: Yeah. Yeah. I would say so too. As a Chinese American, I feel as though the Asians have been shopping at Costco for clothes for a long time, since I was a child. That's funny. But I'm super into their winter stuff like gloves and ski bibs and things. So anytime it's kind of ski season and we need the under type clothing, what are it called? Thermal, it's not thermal underwear anymore, but whatever. Under layers. The layer. Yeah, the layers. Costco is really great for all of that stuff. And then last year there were good pullovers, zip up pullovers that were great, that were also good for layering in the winter. So
Doree: Yeah, I recently got a zip up, it's not exactly a sweatshirt, it's sort of like those Lululemon jackets. And I got it at Costco. And then I was looking up the brand and I was like, they didn't have the exact one that they had at Costco, but the stuff from the brand's website was basically the same price as all the stuff at Costco. So I was like, this is interesting. It wasn't like a deal.
Elise: So Costco didn't really offer a deal. I felt that way about, yeah, they had clothes from Columbia for rain gear and things. It doesn't seem that much cheaper, but it is so convenient to get your clothes at Costco because you're already
Doree: There. Yes.
Elise: You're already there. If you need some basics, pick it up.
Doree: And I also was like, I wonder if this was a Costco exclusive, because like I said, I didn't see it on their website.
Elise: Got it.
Doree: So maybe that was a thing.
Elise: We talked about that New York Times article that showed that they did a deep dive on Costco and how it's become such a successful business all around the world. And there was some stat in there that blew my mind. There were lots of stats that blew my mind, but there was one, and we'll have to include this link also in our show notes, but it was something like two thirds or more of all the cashews in the world, all the cashews grown in the world are purchased by Costco.
Doree: What?
Elise: Yeah. Yeah.
Doree: That's
Elise: Take this
Doree: Out insane if
Elise: It's factually incorrect. But I remember reading in that and just being like, whoa. Crazy. Because it's not just the snack nuts, it's also the cashew clusters and all kinds of other mixes that are available in Costco nut snacks.
Doree: Wow. Okay.
Elise: Yeah, I'll check it just to make sure.
Doree: Yeah, please fact check that.
Elise: Okay. We sure will. We sure will. Before we go, this has kind of become a recurring segment. Do you have any Trader Joe's wrecks door?
Doree: I don't think I have any this week. I have not purchased anything new from TJ's this week. What about you?
Elise: I have one pumpkin thing to add because we've been talking about the pumpkin things that are available really only this season. I tried out the pumpkin spiced teeny tiny pretzels and they are delicious. They're teeny tiny pretzels that are coated and then there's some sort of pumpkin spice stuff on it. And they're salty. They're slightly salty and sweet. There's a little kick because of the spice. Teeny tiny pumpkin pretzels.
Doree: That's
Elise: Fun. It was one of those end cap things as you're pushing your cart around and they have an end cap special display. And then I just was like, yep, well why not?
Doree: My husband, he loves an end cap. He will pretty much buy anything on an end cap. Put it on an end cap. He's in. Well listeners, thank you so much. Please remember to call or text us or email us and we will talk to you again soon.
Elise: Okay. Until next time.
Doree: Bye.
