Kate:                    Hello and welcome to Forever35, a podcast about the things we do to take care of ourselves. I am Kate Spencer.

Doree:                And I'm Doree Shafrir.

Kate:                    And we're not experts.

Doree:                We're not. We're two friends who like to talk a lot about serums.

Kate:                    We do. And this is a mini episode where we actually hear from you about serums and other things, and we share your comments and thoughts, and we answer your questions to the best of our ability.

Doree:                But please remember, we are podcast hosts. We're not experts, and we always encourage you to seek support first and foremost, from a medical and or mental health professional as needed.

Kate:                    And if you would like to reach us, you can text us or leave us a voicemail at (781) 591-0390 or email us at Forever35podcast@gmail.com.

Doree:                And you can visit our website Forever35podcast.com for links to everything we mentioned on the show. Kate:                    friendly reminder that we are supporting the state of Virginia with a giving circle. Virginia needs our help in their state senate. The right wing is two seats away from the majority and the House of Delicates, they hold the majority by two seats. We do not want power to shift in the Senate in Virginia. We can't let this happen. So we are raising money. You can find the link to our giving circle in the show notes of this podcast. So when you're listening in, whatever podcast app you use, you will see a link there. You can also find a link on our website, but please donate any amount. The smallest amount makes the biggest difference.

Doree:                Yeah, we're at 52% of our goal. Kate, we're at more than $10,000.

Kate:                    I checked today to see if we crossed that $10,000 threshold.

Doree:                You did.

Kate:                    Thank you all so much for everyone who's donated so far. We appreciate you.

Doree:                Very cool. All right. And we have an announcement.

Kate:                    Okay. Bu Bubba Bum.

Doree:                We're doing another live digital show. We, we've really had so much fun doing the first one, and we're doing another one to celebrate my birthday, quite honestly.

Kate:                    Okay. Okay. How exciting is this?

Doree:                So this is going to be the Doree's birthday digital live show.

Kate:                    Do I get to make a toast?

Doree:                Kate. Do what you feel.

Kate:                    Oh my gosh. I'm going to write a toast and I'm, you know what? It's going to be heartfelt.

Doree:                Aw, wow. Okay.

Kate:                    I'm not going to roast. I'm not going to roast. I'm going to toast.

Doree:                You're going to toast. Okay.

Kate:                    Roasts. Make me uncomfortable, but toasts make me happy.

Doree:                We are going to have some special guests this time. It's really, it's, it's going to actually be a party.

Kate:                    It will be fun.

Doree:                It'll be so much fun

Kate:                    It'll be off the cuff. I mean, who knows what could happen.

Doree:                I mean, if you were at the first one, you know how much fun this was and if you missed the first one, I'm very sorry, but now you have the opportunity to come to another one. It is going to. I should probably tell people when it is. It's, It's Wednesday, May 17th. My actual birthday is May 16th. Just FYI everybody. And it's going to be at 5:30 PM Pacific Time. 8:30 Eastern Time. Ticket info. Ticket link is in the show notes. We're doing early bird tickets again for the first 48 hours of them being on sale. So if you know you want to go head on over and get those tickets before the price goes up, it's 48. 48 hours like I just said. And we'll be talking about this more, but just wanted to let everyone know that this is happening in three weeks and

Kate:                    cannot wait. We cannot wait to see you there.

Doree:                Yes.

Kate:                    Come one. Come all. We promise it'll be a good time. I always get nervous and excited. It's just going to be, it's going to be great.

Doree:                I'm really excited.

Kate:                    Yeah. We get to Toast Dor, the birth of dor,

Doree:                the birth of Dor. Dor, birth

Kate:                    Dor, birth

Doree:                Also, I have to say at the first live show, the chat was really popping off.

Kate:                    Oh, it was like going a mile a minute.

Doree:                Yeah, it was really fun. It was really fun.

Kate:                    It was my favorite moment once we logged on and we were like, where's everybody from? And then everyone was saying where they were from and it was like this amazing schorge board of locales.

Doree:                Yeah.

Kate:                    I just warmed my little heart so much.

Doree:                It was so cool. It was so cool. So we hope you'll be able to join us last time. It will still be available for seven days after it airs if you have a ticket. So you'll still be able to watch it. You just won't be able to participate in the chat or see anything happen live. But you'll still be able to watch it if you can't make it on the 17th. So that's what's going on. Kate, you had a big weekend,

Kate:                    Doree. Talking about self-care. I did what is probably one of my top self-care practices, which is I went and saw my favorite band, Phish, and this is going to air, and I'll have seen more Phish shows after this airs, hopefully. But I flew to Portland, Oregon. I met up with one of my best friends in the whole world, and we drove to Seattle and we saw our favorite band for two nights.

Doree:                Did you stay over in Seattle or you drove back to Portland?

Kate:                    Oh, no. It's a three hour drive. So we stayed Friday and Saturday.

Doree:                That's what I was wondering.

Kate:                    In Seattle. Yes, at the Ace Hotel.

Doree:                Oh, fun.

Kate:                    Stayed at the Ace Hotel. They have a nice little free breakfast. Just want to give them a shout out. Great. Hard boiled eggs at the Ace Hotel in Seattle.

Doree:                I love that.

Kate:                    But it was great. If you're, you've listened to this podcast before that Phish is my favorite band, Doree, by the time of this recording, I will have seen three more shows here in Los Angeles. I will have seen, I think if I've counted correctly, 84 Phish shows in my lifetime.

Doree:                Wow,

Kate:                    that's pretty good. 84. I'm trying to get to at least a hundred.

Doree:                That is so many. I wonder how many of my brothers been to, should I ask him right now?

Kate:                    Do yeah. Ask him. Doree's brother, also a Phish head. He and I have met up at a Phish show and said hello, and it's just like being with a Phish fan. Doree,

Doree:                is it?

Kate:                    No, it sounds very different. You just look similar. Makes it the only,

Doree:                we do look similar.

Kate:                    You do look similar, but yeah. But yeah, you know what it is it, it's exhausting. I will say I'm tired. It's staying up late. It's dancing. This sounds so old, old of me. But it's hard. It's hard on the body.

Doree:                And yet you see it as self-care.

Kate:                    I do, because it's my happiest place. My friend and I were talking about this on our drive home of just how we really feel our most authentic selves. There's also kind of the feeling of connecting with something that meant a lot to us when we were younger. That still means a lot to us and kind of honoring that, but also growing older and moving forward in life. It's just a really, music, also, live music is such a healing, connecting experience. And I think that was something I really feared losing at the start of Covid when we couldn't go to the beach here in California, everything. We couldn't go on a playground. There was just this feeling that we would never get to experience these things that are so transformative and nurturing and needed. And I'm so grateful to be able to see live music again.

Doree:                That's really, yeah, that's really special.

Kate:                    It was so much fun.

Doree:                I'm so glad you got the chance to do this.

Kate:                    I love Phish. I love Phish. I love them. I just really do. There are a few Forever35 listeners who also love Phish. I do. I don't think there's a ton of us,

Doree:                really.

Kate:                    I know there are a few of you out there

Doree:                that surprises me actually.

Kate:                    Yeah, there are a few. I mean, it's a lot. It is a lot. To go see a band five out of 10 nights.

Doree:                I meant to say it surprises me that there's not more Phish fans

Kate:                    in our audience?

Doree:                In our audience. Yeah.

Kate:                    Well, I think it's hard to be a casual Phish fan. You know, you can be a Char casual hairstyles fan and go to his concert, but Phish, it's like it's a lot. It is a commitment. The songs are long.

Doree:                That is fair.

Kate:                    There's a lot of songs. It's an intense hobby sometimes.

Doree:                Well, I respect that.

Kate:                    Thank you. I had a great time.

Doree:                I'm really glad to hear that. Kate,

Kate:                    did your brother respond?

Doree:                He has not responded yet. Which. Frankly is rude.

Kate:                    How dare he. How, dare he. All right. Well then let's take a break. And when we come back, what's really interesting, this episode, it's like all skincare makeup.

Doree:                Great. I love it.

Kate:                    After the break, we're talking about Accutane.

Doree:                All right, we'll be right back.

Kate:                    So Doree, we had a listener reach out to us with questions about going on Accutane, how to moisturize any products that might be helpful. And we received a lot of responses from people who have been on Accutane. And so we'll play a couple voicemails. But first we received this email they wrote to us. I had amazing results and regretted that I hadn't done it sooner for my mild to moderate hormonal cystic acne. I'm considering another round. Unfortunately, it wore off for me after seven years, but six years of much clearer skin was worth it. Excuse me, advice, invest in a large tub of aquifer, a pry liberally to lips every 15 minutes. I thought my dermatologist was joking. He was not. Apply a thick layer on your hands at night and put on cotton gloves a few nights a week. Not sexy, but it works to avoid chopped hands. I also love the Jack Black lip, BLM Jack Black lip balm. Cut out all actives and just use a very simple, gentle cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen. I use Purpose Cleanser recommended by my dermatologist and CeraVe pm. Stick with it. There is a purge phase. My course took me four months and I had to increase my dose, but it really worked and it was so liberating to feel comfortable and confident leaving the house without makeup. Good luck.

Doree:                Wow. I love the firsthand experience.

Kate:                    We received a lot of first handers, of which you and I are not first handers. I've never tried it.

Doree:                We're not. No, I haven't tried it either. All right. Here is a voicemail.

Voicemail:          Hi, Kat and Dor longtime Safe or longtime fan pod. I'm calling to give a recommendation for the caller who's starting Accutane. I was on Accutane in 2020. What a time. And I tried almost everything at Sephora and Ulta that claimed it was moisturizing and my skin was so dry, it hurt. But the number one thing that made it turn around for me was the CeraVe moisturizing cream that comes in the tube blathering my face and my body in that made such a huge difference. And the CeraVe moisturizing face wash was also a game changer. So best of luck to that listener. I've had great results from Accutane after struggling for years with my acne. I'm 33 now, and I have never looked back. And my skin looks great, and my acne has, it's been life changing. The results so rarely had a breakout ever since. So highly recommend talking to your doctor and seeing if it's right for you. And the CeraVe Moisturizing Cream and the CeraVe Moisturizing Moisturizing facewash. So best luck and thanks for the pod. Love you guys.

Kate:                    Okay. Okay. Head to the prod list, everybody. If you are an Accutainer

Doree:                I love how you give everyone like a fandom name,

Kate:                    the Accutainers.

Doree:                The Accutainers.

Kate:                    That's true. I do tend to do that. I do tend to be a nickname creator.

Doree:                Yeah. I like it.

Kate:                    Yeah. It's a little, it can be annoying at times, but I stick with it.

Doree:                It's kind of your thing. You're like a nicknamer.

Kate:                    Yes, I am a nicknamer. It's interesting to me, I think one thing, as I've kind of been refocusing my skincare products on a lot of these drugstore brands, I'm just reminded of the power of CeraVe.

Doree:                Sure, sure.

Kate:                    They really, let's not get sidetracked by flashier things.

Doree:                Yeah.

Kate:                    When CeraVe really delivers the goods.

Doree:                That is fair.

Kate:                    Although, I will say I do not like the CeraVe pm.

Doree:                Ooh, okay.

Kate:                    It just doesn't do it for me. I just much prefer my Vana cream.

Doree:                Hey, look, we all have our personal preferences.

Kate:                    Yeah. I'm a Vanny girl.

Doree:                Okay. You're a Vanny girl.

Kate:                    How'd that work for you? That nickname

Doree:                Vanny Girl. I mean, it's okay. I don't hate it.

Kate:                    Oh, it's very gendered.

Doree:                Yeah. I feel like you could do better, honestly.

Kate:                    Yeah. Okay. I'll work on the Vanna Kreme fandom Name

Doree:                Van fan.

Kate:                    Van Fam

Doree:                fan? Van fan.

Kate:                    I'm trying to think of a Vanna Kreme. Vanderpump Rules mashup Vanna Cream rules. No. Van Fam is good. Okay. I like this. All right, we've got it.

Doree:                Okay, Kate, let's hear another voicemail.

Voicemail:          Hey guys, I was catching up on some episodes. Caller Accutane. So I'm actually a community pharmacist, so I deal with Accutane all the time. I have tons of folks of varying ages on it. And the main thing with that, it really can dry out your skin, making sure that you have a really nice soothing moisturizer, especially at night. So obviously every person's skin is different, but since this particular listener was using it for cystic acne and stuff like that, I would probably do something like a usein, like something that's nice and heavy or thick. I know a previous listener had recommended using will to skin food on their face, so maybe that might be a spoil me kind of option for them. And also just making sure that you're very, very strict with yourself about sun care. Obviously you were always talking about sunscreen and sun protection, but Accutane can really make your skin more sensitive to everything. But that includes sun exposure and sun damage. And we want to make sure that we're not treating one skin condition and then causing another sunburn and skin cancer. So especially with spring and summer coming up of, at least in the Northern Hemisphere where we want to make sure that we're encouraging folks to protect their skin from sun damage. And then as far as things, other things to do and watch out for and stuff like that, theologists are pretty on top of keeping up with their patients on that. Cause it's actually a federal law requirement that folks identifying as female have to have a negative pregnancy test every single month. And the doctor has to attest to that before they can get it at the pharmacy because it can cause some pretty severe birth defects if that is missed and somebody does end up pregnant while taking it. But yeah, I just wanted to offer that some professional advice. Like I said, I'm a pharmacist, so this is kind of my bread and butter over here, and I wish the best of luck to my fellow listener and thank y'all for everything that you do. Been a loyal pod listener for a long time, and you bring me a lot of joy on my commute to and from my very difficult job, so thanks. Bye.

Kate:                    Community pharmacist. Hello. Thank you for weighing in with your wisdom.

Doree:                Yeah.

Kate:                    We're going to take a little break and when we come back, we've got gentle retinol recommendations.

Doree:                Okay. I can't wait.

Kate:                    And another five minute makeup routine. People are sending us their five minute makeup routines. Keep 'em coming, but we're going to bring you another one after the break.

Doree:                All right. We have returned.

Kate:                    All right. Get your pens ready because

Doree:                Well, this will, also all be on our website.

Kate:                    It will, it will, but I'm just making a little joke.

Doree:                Okay. Hi, Kat and Dor, A listener was ask asking for gentler retinol. I have very sensitive skin as well. I've had better luck using milder options when being mindful of maintaining and repairing my skin's barrier. A few vegan cruelty-free options. One, gentler retinols, Paula's choice retinol Vitamin C and peptide moisturizer is $62 for two ounces. It replaces a multi-step regimen. Mad hippie vitamin A serum is about $25 for 1.7 ounces. It is fairly gentle and layers well. They also recommend glow recipe avocado, retinol two B H A A H A. Alternatives like lactic or glycolic acid, serum or essence bioscience lactic acid serum Paula's choice B H a, or a HHA serum, the strong strongest option glow recipe, B H A P C A essence toner, mad hippie exfoliating serum Pacifica glow baby serum three. Use a calming serum moisturizer or essence or serum. First, the ordinary h ha or derma e hyaluronic acid serum hyaluronic serum or pycnogenol moisturizer on damp skin. Let it absorb. Then apply the retinol finish with a Ceramide barrier repair moisturizer like Pacifica Ceramide, $17 for two ounces. First aid beauty six moisturizer $35 for six ounces with other calming ingredients, CEVI moisturizer, $20 for six ounces, Pacifica's Ceramide line. She could also apply the Ceramide moisturizer first four, use mild unscented cleansers and don't scrub in the am. Try something like Inky list OAT or boots squalene cleansers. $10 for two ounces to remove makeup. Use one of those first and follow with a gentle lathering cleanser like Holah, holah aloe, or derma E hyaluronic face Wash five during the day. Don't use exfoliating products. Instead, use a peptide serum or moisturizer like a cure. Nighttime whipped moisturizer, the ordinary peptide serum and or ceramide moisturizer during the day six, zinc based sunscreen. This will help here heal the skin barrier and organic aloe vera spray. Organic rosewater or a cica Sika.

Kate:                    I would say seka, but seka, maybe

Doree:                C I C A spray can help also keep irritation down. Thanks for the lovely podcast wishing you both happiness and continuing success. Wow, this was comprehensive.

Kate:                    Catch all that. Did you catch all of that?

Doree:                I mean, I didn't, and I was reading it.

Kate:                    I would say there's so many good rec recommendations here. It's like, I don't even know. I almost don't even know where to begin. But I'm going to just begin with one thing, especially interested in the old Pacifica coming back up here.

Doree:                Okay.

Kate:                    I only mentioned Pacifica because they were one of the first makeup products I bought in my thirties. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Anyway. Great. Rex. Thank you, listener. I would love to know if any folks of these resonated. You've heard these before and you're like, yes, I use this.

Doree:                This also reminded me of a very gentle retinol moisturizer that I also really like, which is the strata night shift.

Kate:                    Oh, yes.

Doree:                It has encapsulated retinol, but it's only one. It's only point .15% retinol. And it's very gentle. But I think that's a good one. Think effective.

Kate:                    That is a nice moisturizer. A nice nighttime moisturizer.

Doree:                Yeah.

Kate:                    Yeah. Good call.

Doree:                Thank you.

Kate:                    All right. Well, let's share another listener, five minute makeup routine.

Doree:                I'm going to let you read this one, because that wouldn't was a mouthful for me.

Kate:                    Yeah. Take a break. Have some water. Relax. All right. Here's what this listener says. This is basically my daily ritual in the car on the way to work, because getting out of the house on time with two toddlers under five is hard. But also my makeup makes me feel a little more put together. Number one, under eye concealer. Currently using Maybelline Fit me in fair. Taking Rex on this one. Foundation milk makeup, sunshine, skin tint with SPF 30 blush. Currently using eco Fabulous powder brush in chaia eyeliner. I'm loving. Aris Soho's Perfecto. Aris Hohos, perfect. Perfecto gel pencer eyeliner in gold for daily gold. Ooh. Or steal us. Stay all day liquid waterproof eyeliner and intense black. If I want a more dramatic look, mascara currently using Elia Limitless slash mascara, but going to try Elf Next Lips. Usually Burts Bee's Chapstick, or one of my favorite bold matte lipsticks for colors, Sephora lip stories and a little magic or Fendy Beauty. Matam Mozel in Candy Venom. Okay. So the Sephora one is an A cool red, and the Fenty Beauty one is quote, an amazing Fusia hot pink that's been discontinued. Oh, how dare you. This combo stays on my face through my 13 hour shifts in my busy pharmacy and doesn't run. Thanks for the awesome pod and parasocial friendship. Well, you're, you're welcome. For the friendship, these are racks. I love this list. I actually just bought a bunch of Burts Bees lipstick colors. They have not lipstick burpees. They're kind of like moisturizing lip balm in different colors. I bought three because I couldn't decide, so I'm testing them out right now.

Doree:                That's exciting, Kate.

Kate:                    Yeah, this is just a great quick face of makeup. I love it. And I actually think it almost doesn't matter what the product is. These are just like, it's like this is a very easy, slap it on and go.

Doree:                Love that.

Kate:                    But I want to ask, what is your five minute makeup routine person listening right now? Anybody out there? Please send it to us.

Doree:                Yeah.

Kate:                    And we'll read it on the pod.

Doree:                Yep.

Kate:                    Love these.

Doree:                Alright, everybody,

Kate:                    Tata for now.

Doree:                Bye.
