Kate: And hey, while we're at it, don't forget about our collab with Balance Bound where you can purchase Forever35 merch@balancebound.co/forever35

Doree: So fun

Kate: So fun. I actually need to put a new Doree's Hotel Key chain onto my keys. I'm very excited. Yeah, I have one on one set of keys, but I need to put them on another and it really makes finding your keys and your big black hole bag much easier. Having a big key chain really helps.

Doree: I agree. I love my Doriee's Hotel key chain.

Kate: I know I do too. Well, Doree, this is going to be informally titled the Drugstore Makeup and Beauty mini episode because we received a bunch of recommendations from listeners of their favorite beauty products that can be purchased at your local drugstore.

Doree: Hello.

Kate: Hello. Thank you. I mean, this is a great starter list. You know, can find it all on the website and I will be shopping it. So shall we just hop right into some recommendations?

Doree: Let's hippity hop right in.

Kate: Okay. Because that's what this whole episode is. I just wanna be clear, buckle up for approximately 25 to 30 minutes of Drugstore beauty recos.

Doree: We love to see it,

Kate: So we're going to see, start things off with an email. We do love to see it. We love it. And this email begins as such. Welcome to the sorted aisles of CVS. Yes, the Halloween chocolate is expired and the deodorant is under literal lock and key. But don't let that deter you. As your guide. Let me help you find the shimmering jewels among the detritus. If you enjoy a natural quote "French girl" look. Okay. First recommendation, Wet-n-Wild tinted hydrator. I've tried Elia's Skin Tint, Laura Mercier's, tinted moisturizer, and many other skin tints from Sephora. And I prefer this by a long shot. $5 and applies dreamily with a drugstore Real Techniques Beauty Blender. Nyx Matt Lipstick in Perfect Red. I found this years ago when Jemima Kirk's character wore it on an episode of Girls. My resemblance to Jemima Kirk admittedly starts and ends with this lipstick, but I'll take it true to its name. And a dupe for Macs Russian Red. Nyx micro brow pencil duped for the Anastasia Benefit Brow pencils, any L'Oreal mascara and cream blushes from Milani Elf and Wet-n-Wild and a bonus Unsung Drugstore Skincare Pick Olay Mineral SPF 30, moisturizing leaves no white cast on my skin tone and has "clean ingredients" without being marketed as such. See you between the Crumbled Bronzer and Bandaids

So I just first wanna note that this is going to be the first mention of a brand I have. I don't even know if I've ever really heard of, which is Milani.

Doree: Oh, I know Milani.

Kate: You do. You've used Milani before.

Doree: I, yes. I feel like it was one of those brands that I just ended up with because you could buy them at the drugstore.

Kate: I don't know if I've ever even heard of it.

Doree: I bet you would recognize it if you saw it. You'd be like, oh yeah, I've seen that.

Kate: Well now I do. I don't know if it's because I was reading so many messages that all were repeating the name Milani, but I started to feel like I did know it, but I'm not actually, I don't know. So I'm very, I just wanna repeat, very excited to try it so I'm a little hyper because there's just a wealth of opportunity here with all these new products. Wet-n-Wild tinted hydrator. Very excited about this.

Doree: Yeah,

Kate: I also just wanna note the listeners charming writing.

Doree: Yes, totally.

Kate: This was a delightful read. You should publish this.

Doree: See you between the Crumbled Bronzer and the Bandaids

Kate: like, yes, I will see you.

Doree: So cute.

Kate: I'll see you. And the deodorant under lock and key. Yes, I know that well, I know those little plastic doors that are locked. I mean, I get it. I do like L'Oreal mascara. I have used it a bunch Elf, oh no, excuse me. The cream blushes. I haven't tried from any of these brands, but I'm excited to try. I haven't also tried this Nyx Matt lipstick, but like Hondo P I'm going in on it. I mean, this is going to be, I'm going to have to do a hall episode.

Doree: I can't wait for that, honestly.

Kate: Alright, next text. Hi Drugstore fave Elf Primer. The pink one. I used to use Smashbox and I think Elf is just as good, maybe better. I use this actually, and it's just as good

Doree: I mean, we like Elf around here.

Kate: I mean, not to play a sad trombone, but Elf was a sponsor of this podcast at one point, and it was the greatest day of my life because they sent us products, but they're no longer sponsor at the moment. It doesn't mean that we won't welcome them back with open arms.

Doree: Come back, Elf, come back.

Kate: Come back to us. I want you to stick to us like your Power Grip primer, which I use on my face.

Doree: Oh, I see what you did there.

Kate: So this lister said the pink one, but, and maybe they mean their putty primer, which I also really like, but I use their power grip primer. I just brought this with me when I traveled. It is to me the equivalent of that Smashbox one that I have used in the past. That is pricey.

Doree: Okay.

Kate: Okay. Doree, you wanna take this text?

Doree: I would love to. Literally just had to pause the pod. You both read my mind, re the discussion around lowering spending on makeup and skincare and pursuing options at the drugstore. I'm just not doing the big spends at Sephora anymore. I have some drugstore brands that I love, La Roche Posay, Nuxe, Flower, et cetera. And here in Canada, we have some great drug stores, shoppers, London Drugs, Rexel, et cetera. Thank you for highlighting this. Love to you both from Devin in Vancouver, also have a toddler named Henry and was a horse girl growing up.

Kate: What a good combo of two of our favorite things. your child and horses.

Doree: I wonder if my child will ever ride a horse.

Kate: Well, I mean, that's up to you.

Doree: I know.

Kate: Have you ever brought him to a, you could have him.

Doree: He's ridden. He's ridden. He's ridden a pony at Griffith Park, which I know is they're not going to be there much longer but he has done that. He has not ridden an actual horse though.

Kate: Well, I mean Pony Horse as a horse girl I think either is fine.

Doree: Oh, Okay.

Kate: It counts. The pony counts. Yeah. I would love it if Henry got very into horses. That would be fun.

Doree: I mean, look, anything could happen.

Kate: I know from trucks to horses. So this text, as excited as I am by these product recommendations, it did also just make me green with envy because I don't know, the pharmacies up north in our neighboring country of Canada

Are just far superior than what we have here. I mean, look, you have it all. You have gun control, you've got universal healthcare, and you've got great pharmacies. Look, I know the grass is always greener. Oh, okay. I know it's not perfect in ye old Canada, but sometimes it seems like it is, is all I'm saying. Sometimes it seems I hear you like you've got got shoppers. So I'm jealous is what I'm saying. Here's the question that I wanna pose to you, Doree.

Doree: Okay.

Kate: Have you ever tried Flower Beauty? I've never tried Drew Barrymoore's beauty line.

Doree: I have not. I'm intrigued, but I have not.

Kate: I am too. I love Drew as a fun Instagram follow and she'll do makeup tutorials with Flower stuff and it always looks really lovely and I also just wanna kind of give her some credit where credit's due is being one of the celebrities who's been in this beauty game longer than the rest. I'm intrigued by Flower. I should grab some of their stuff. Also like, yes, Drew Barrymore would be an amazing guest on this podcast. If anyone knows how to make that happen, it would be a thrill.

Doree: Totally.

Kate: Right? Mm-hmm. Drew, Doree, and Kate together at last,

Doree: An iconic trio.

Kate: I love. I would love, yes. I know the people demand it. I also recently read that Nuxe has a dupe for my beloved Fragrance Bronze Goddess, but I've been trying to track it down.

Doree: Really?

Kate: Yeah, they have fragrances. I actually have one of their fragrances and it just smells like their Prodigieux, and it's fine. But I'm trying to get my hands on this alleged dupe, but I haven't had any luck. So if I do this, I shall report back.

Doree: Please do. I'm intrigued.

Kate: I will, I will, let's take a pause, and come back with more recs for you.

Doree: All right. We are back with a text from a listener who writes Drugstore Product Wreck, the Milani concealer wand as a 35 year old listener and someone who has only ever shopped at drugstores for makeup, I've never understood spending for more, but I'm probably missing out, this $10 stick takes the cake. I've always had dark circles under my eyes and this little baby is like a glorious magic eraser for the face. Sometimes I wonder, do I look perhaps annoyingly awake? would love to hear if you try it. I look too bright eyed and bushy-tailed.

Kate: I am. I've got look like I've got too much rest. What a dream that would be to look annoyingly awake. That sounds wonderful. What an endorsement. That is totally the perfect tagline for this project. The Milani Concealer Wand Do I look perhaps annoyingly awake? I love it.

Doree: Oh gosh. So good. So good. Okay,

Kate: So then another Milani recommendation came in. This person writes in response to Kate's question about favorite drugstore brand makeup, Milani Conceal and Perfect foundation. I follow a makeup artist on Instagram who uses drugstore products in her kit. She recommended this one. And the Elf Camo Concealer black lid only. These two are now staples for me, and each cost about $6. I know this isn't a drugstore brand, but I've tried a few cream blushes and nothing compares to Rare Beauties Melting cream blush. I don't think $21 is cheap, but it's definitely not a high end price in my humble opinion. Love it. So once again, Milani and Elf coming in hot Milani.

Doree: That's also hot.

Kate: That's three Milani recommendations.

Doree: It is three Milani recommendations and also Hot Tip on Rear Beauty, even though not a drugstore brand. But thank you for that.

Kate: This is Selena Gomez's makeup line Rare Beauty.

Doree: Yes. Have you tried it?

Kate: I haven't tried a single item from it, but I'm interested. I definitely am curious. I think what's happening right now is that I am personally feeling a bit overwhelmed by the relentless celebrity skincare and beauty lines. Like Hailey Bieber has a skin. Like it's just. There's not to say that they aren't great products or whatever. I haven't tried any of them, but

Doree: No, but it's a lot.

Kate: I almost like shut down the, every time I hear of one of these things, so I just haven't, something about it has the opposite effect where I'm less inclined to try it because

Doree: Kate, you did wanna try Brad Pitt's skincare.

Kate: Who's? Brad Pitt's Skincare?

Doree: Yeah. You wanted to try that, if you recall.

Kate: I do recall, but that's because the jar is beautiful.

Doree: Okay.

Kate: But yes, I do wanna try it. I do. I should reach out to their PR because I am kinda curious, what if it's the greatest serum to ever live? Okay, I've already done. I've already talked about this, I'm going to stop. But I would try it and then drink their rose because that rose that he and Angelina Jolie made when they were, I think their domain wines or whatever still makes is very good.

Doree: Alright. Should I take this next email?

Kate: Take it away.

Doree: Okay. Drugstore makeup Recs. I use pressed powder instead of foundation, and I love Physician's Formula, Mineral Wear Face Powder or Cover Girl, Clean Fresh Pressed Powder. Both are talc free. Revlon's Insta Blush Stick is also a great dupe for the Clinique chubby stick and lasts forever. Also, I know you asked for makeup, not hair care, but my number one drugstore rec of all time is Suave Kids. Kids Detangling spray in the scent Silly apple, it detangles leaves your hair super soft can be used on wet or dry hair. And it's my number one defense against winter static, kind of like a leave-in conditioner. I've been using it for literally 25 years and it's the best $4.99 you'll ever spend Target. I cringe when I see people buying fancy expensive detangling sprays.

Kate: Okay. There's so much good stuff in here. But I have to say, I also have used Suaves Kids Detangling Spray in the scent Silly Apple. And I also like it and I, I'm actually a, yeah, and I love Suave. I often by Suave shampoo and conditioner if I'm just picking some up at the drugstore or target. I think my mom always used to get suave and something about it is that there's that nostalgic feeling, but I also like it. It's good. Let's just like good and cheap. Now I'm currently using a pantene detangling spray, but

Doree: Okay. Another throwback.

Kate: Oh, I love Pantene. I will always buy Panten. I think it's like there's weird loyalties that live on from our teens. Right,

Doree: I hear that. I hear that.

Kate: All right. Here's one more email that we can share. Hi, Kate and Doree just listened to your latest epp, 246 and Kate, you were asking about drugstore makeup. Well, I have recommendations for you. The best mascara I have ever used is Maybelline, the Falsies Lash Lift. Not just the Falsies, but the Lash Lift. It's the best mascara I have ever tried at any price point. For a while during the pandemic, it was unavailable and now I, excuse me. And I now have a few and backup at all times, just in case. Panic at the disco or pandemic at the disco. The second recommendation is covergirl Outlast. I know you said you wanted to be a covergirl. Well, this two-step lipstick is so excellent and long-lasting. You put on the color, let it set, and then apply the balm whenever needed during the day. I don't know if you were still wearing masks down there, but it stays on even under a mask. It doesn't smear. You can eat and drink and it stays on.

Doree: Wow, okay.

Kate: We are still wearing masks down here. In fact, we are wearing them now more than ever because cases are ticking up here in Los Angeles.

Doree: That's true.

Kate: But look, we've been at this now for a while, so we don't need to get into it today. But I love a Cover Girl recommendation. I really like their products. Maybelline also, Doree is like a classic mascara, wouldn't you say?

Doree: Oh yes, definitely. Definitely.

Kate: All right. These are good. The list. The list builds.

Doree: These were very good. These were very good.

Kate: Are you seeing. Is anything popping out to you that you feel like you see a hole in your makeup kit and you would reach for one of these? What are you using these days and where might you pick something up?

Doree: Well, I'm intrigued by these concealer recs because I have a concealer that I like, but it is expensive. I'm also, again, not drugstore, but I am intrigued by this Rare Beauty Blush. And I would try this Nyx Matt lipstick also.

Kate: Yeah, that sound, the one that's going to make us look like Jemima Kirk?

Doree: Yes.

Kate: Yes. Mm-hmm. The Jemima Kirk lipstick, the one that transform this listener to Jemima Kirk.

Doree: What are you going to run out to Walgreens and get any of this stuff?

Kate: So I mean, you know me I always, instead of

Doree: You are like iron minimalism,

Kate: Doree. I'm in, I'm recording from inside of Walgreens right now. Here's what is really speaking to me. Okay. The wet-n-wild tinted hydrator. I love a skin tint. And the one I'm using is now, I actually got a coverable one that I'm like eh on. It's a little dry, so I think I'm going to try this one. The Nyx Matte lipstick for sure. I feel like I have Nyx Micro Brow pencils.

Doree: I feel like I have that too.

Kate: Cream blush. Intrigued. Intrigued by the Milani, but also I kind of just wanna go over to the Flower Beauty section and just see what's doing. And then, yes, this Milani concealer won. The fact, I mean, do I look perhaps annoyingly awake line sold me immediately.

Doree: So funny.

Kate: And then I saw this Revlon Insta blush stick is kind of intriguing as well. I mean, all of it is intriguing. I'm just kind of thinking about what don't I have or what am I drawn to in terms of what I use for makeup. So

Doree: Right.

Kate: That's where I'm at. That's where I'm at. Oh, and this covergirl Outlast. I think I've tried a Maybelline version of this, and I find these all day lip colors drying. So I would try, I'd be open to trying this again, just to see what the experience is like with the covergirl Outlast.

Doree: Okay.

Kate: All right. Well listen, we have a couple more recommendations. So why don't we take another break and come back and just hear from a few more people.

Doree: Okay, let's do that. All right, Kate, we are back and we have a voicemail.

Voicemail: Hi Kat and Dor. Just had to pause the pod when you were talking about what makeup products are really great to buy at the drugstore. I never buying mascara from anywhere other than the drugstore ever again. When I say I've tried all the fancy mascara, I have tried Dior. I have tried Better Than Sex. I have tried, I love Ilia. I like all of these fancy, expensive $30 mascara, but they dry out. You're supposed to replace them so frequently. Do you have any sort of eye infection or anything you need to throw out your mascara? And it just seems like such a waste of money. So recently I have tried a handful of drugstore mascara and I'm not even going to list them cause there are so many good drugstore mascara. They're all good. I really, actually, I will list one. I'm using the HighLine TikTok mascara, but I bought three and they're all phenomenal. So drugstore mascara. Here for it, never going back, never spending $30 on mascara ever again. Alright, have a great day. Bye.

Doree: I mean, I agree with this pretty much. Mascara is not something that you're supposed to keep around for five years. You're supposed to be kind of rotating your mascara pretty frequently, so it makes sense to do a drugstore.

Kate: Yeah, and I think the listener that this, excuse me. I think the mascara, the viral mascara this listener was recommending is Maybelline's Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara. I guess it went viral on TikTok. This is just me Googling went viral on TikTok last year. So I haven't tried this, but now I will.

Doree: I'm excited for you. I mean, as I've discussed, one of my favorite mascara's is the Elf Lash Out Loud mascara. I love that mascara.

Kate: I also like the No Seven Tubing mascara. That's a good one too.

Doree: Oh, okay. I'm only not using it right now because I ran out and Thrive Cosmetics sent me their tubing mascara, which I, that also really like, which is not a drugs for mascara, obviously, but is not expensive. Is not, it's

Kate: Not the Dior Show, whatever.

Doree: Exactly. It's not Dior Show

Kate: Which I think it's over hyped.

Doree: I used Dior Show for years and I would say it's fine. Although now that I'm looking at it, Dior Show is $29.50 and the Thrive Cosmetics is $25. Okay. So in my head, I'm sorry, everyone. The Thrive was like $15, but it's not, it's $25. So that is actually on the more expensive side.

Kate: It is a very good mascara though, I gotta say. But it's very good. It's really good. You know what, I will just anecdotally share that my daughter and I popped on over to the Dollar King Dollar Store and they, upon entry, had a big table setup with makeup and Milani was one of the brands. And I think she actually got a Milani, I let her, she loves experimenting with makeup and doing all these fun cool things. So I support that. So she got herself an eyeshadow palette and a Milani lipstick, but I had never perused my dollar store for makeup too. So that was just, it was perfect timing. They had some Cover girl, they had some Milani, and I was like, did you all know I'm recording an episode on Drugstore Makeup

Doree: And they were like, yes, Kate Horse Spencer,

Kate: I'm the Doller King, and i love the pod.

Doree: thank you for coming in.

Kate: Ugh. Anyway, that was an exciting find. Doree. We're going to end with another recommendation from a friend in the land of Maple Trees. This person writes Canadian here. I was on vacation last week and forgot to pack any makeup. So I went into a local shoppers to pick up a few essentials. I got my regular mascara, Nyx on the Rise Volume Lift mascara, which I love, a unisex tinted hydrator from Quo, the brand that Sachi cool mentioned and a lip prod from Nyx called Lingerie XXL matte liquid lipstick in the color warmup. Okay.

Doree: Thay is a mouthful.

Kate: I know. This lip prod is so good. I put it on and then it dries and stays on, but my lips don't dry out feeling like chalk falling off my face.

Doree: Okay. All right.

Kate: Nyx is really making a statement here

Doree: Nyx is really shining

Kate: With their lip products now. Let's just imagine what the meeting was like over at Nyx headquarters when they were like, what should we call this one? And they were like, how about Lingerie XXL Matt Liquid Lipstick in the color warmup? And the team was like, yes,

Doree: Totally.

Kate: That is a lot to say.

Doree: Oh my gosh. Yes. That's very funny.

Kate: Well, listen, I would say please keep these recommendations coming. I will definitely be trying out some of these and sharing what I like. And I would also love to hear people's skincare, drugstore prod recs. I know we've talked about many of our faves, but it might be fun to kind of reevaluate, hear from some people on what they're picking up. I know. I just recommended Cerave Salicylic acid-based facial cleanser to a friend. I was very excited. I was like, I need some of that again. Yeah. Yeah. So anyone's got some drug score skincare or haircare you wanna throw out there. We're all ears.

Doree: We are all ears. Hit us up.

Kate: Thank you so much for all these recommendations.

Doree: All right. Bye everyone.
